Although Nirvana seems to get the credit for opening the world to the Alternative Nation, Jane’s Addiction leader Perry Farrell was the one who literally coined the term “Alternative Nation.” After releasing three groundbreaking records, the band broke up in 1991. They have had various attempts at reviving its legacy, and are making a strong claim recently by welcoming back founding member Eric Avery. What a coincidence that Nick Cialdini and I, two Wisconsinites moonlighting in Italy, had an in-depth conversation about Jane’s Addiction over a tasty meal this summer. What food is Minutemen?

Minutemen were to hardcore what The Talking Heads were to punk. D Boon, Mike Watt and George Hurley, the three "corndogs" from San Pedro that drove the Minutemen style of Econo punk rock, understood that being punk meant breaking down all the establishment borders. SST records helped them get their first recordings out to the people, and also helped them create their own label, New Alliance. Mike Watt and company are the focus of this weeks food/ music pairing! Sitting in as co-pilot is Jeanette Dainty, an old friend who almost named her first born after the iconic bass player. We will dig deep into their history, the inseparable friendship of the band's nucleus, Mike Watt and D Boon, the impact they had on punk and hardcore music, and why they are still on everyone's minds. I travelled to a remote lake house straddled between the North Carolina and Georgia border to discuss why this band is so important to a devoted group fans who also happen to be members of my running team, (the Rabies Awareness Running Team). We discuss the very beginning of Jim James' venture into the reverb drenched records, starting with Tennessee Fire and onwards. What food is Huey Lewis and The News? Featuring Leo Sidran

For this week's band to food pairing, we examine the history of California's 80’s rock staple, Huey Lewis and The News. My partner for the journey is none other than Oscar winning producer, multi-instrumentalist, Grammy nominated composer, as well as host of the podcast The Third Story, Leo Sidran. Together we will discuss the deep roots of Huey’s upbringing as a child of two parents on different coasts of the country, the history of Huey’s first major band Clover and how they got the gig of backing Elvis Costello for his first record, the controversy surrounding Ghostbusters and it’s similarity to one of The News’s biggest hits, as well as how the band is currently dealing with their frontman’s recent hearing loss diagnosis. The day Roland Orzabal laid eyes on a handsome Indian looking fellow in Bath England, (he wasn't Indian), Curt Smith and Roland became a musical force that eventually became Tears for Fears. They came to rule the world in the 80's, split up in the 90's, and reformed in the 00's. They just released a new record that's right on par with the rest of their catalog. For this week's episode of This Band Could Be Your Food, I travel to Asheville NC to talk with the number one Tears for Fears fan in my orbit, Ross Britton. We will discuss the musical history of the band beginning with their mod group, Graduate, who the coolest member of Tears for Fears is, (hint- it's not Curt or Roland), the meticulous process that the band undergoes when making new records, and prepare one of the most involved dishes in TBCBYF history. What food is Neutral Milk Hotel?

Jeff Mangum and his fellow Ruston, Louisiana buddies in Elephant 6 had a lot of bands with a lot silly names. Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Cranberry Lifestyle, System Flying Machine, Elf Power... just to name a select few. Of all of these groups, one really captured the imagination of the indie rock world; Neutral Milk Hotel. With the help of schoolyard friend and musical companion Robert Schneider, the recording project that eventually morphed into the four piece we know and love recorded two incredibly beautiful, noisy and influential records, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea and On Avery Island. For authenticity sake, I head down south to record this episode with my old friend Ross Britton. He just happens to own my favorite coffee shop, Izzy's Coffee.
